And wait until you see inside the asylum… The danger of riding through the woods, passing the archers practicing for the impending war. This is a feast for the eyes and ears – this journey into medieval mystery – across counties and shires, along dusty roads, past old iron foundries with the sweat and toil there is an experience to savour. People can’t afford the basic necessities in life and poverty and criminal activity is rife. The English fleet are gathering at Portsmouth, men are being called up to fight in the militia. England is expecting the French to land at any moment so the tension is high and the fear everywhere. Henry VIII’s invasion of France was flawed from the start and has gone badly wrong. The background and setting are vital to the plot – This is the time of Henry VIII in what was to be his final marriage, marriage number six to Catherine Parr.Įngland is at war. ![]() Tudor London, and a long and arduous journey down to Portsmouth via Hampshire, and Surrey. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Jewel e ann out of love![]() ![]() I enjoyed her descriptive and immersive storytelling and the depth of characters. Ann book, as she is so highly recommended by my romance reader friends. I enjoy a grumpy man-bread, and you all know I love a cinnamon roll hero but this story is not that. It may have just been the rude broody alpha that didn't do it for me, but I wasn't feeling it. As the story developed I found myself uninterested and "waiting for the good parts." Again, this could have very well been mostly due to the narration. ![]() I know most romance readers love a bad boy mysterious hero, but I was quite annoyed at all the mystery around Slade and his dog (why did all the professors just let him bring his dog to class, no questions asked?) I wasn't invested in the characters, and found Livy unlikable, a bit annoying, and even needy at times. The female narrator didn't have a distictive male voice, so it was hard to differentiate. I love audiobooks cuz I can multi-task while listening, but if I miss the first 2 seconds of a new chapter, I miss who is talking. ![]() When a female reads the whole book, yet there are chapters from a male's POV, I sometimes miss it, and later realize."Wait, this is a male talking?" It was confusing at times, and hard to follow. Also an important note, I feel the narration was left wanting and therefore affected my enjoyment of the book. ![]() I may have enjoyed this more if I'd read the other books. Ann book, and though it is a standalone - I heard it's a spin-off. 3.5 stars - I received this audiobook from Valentine PR in exchange for my honest review. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Nicholas nickleby novel![]() As they journey to London, they stumble upon a theatrical troupe owned and operated by Mr and Mrs Crummles. Is his demand that the miller’s daughter spin straw into gold, or die, any worse than Rumpelstiltskin’s insistence that she keep her promise to give him her first-born child? And once the miller’s daughter (who is never given a name) manages (with the help of Rumpelstiltskin) this feat, the king marries her – again, the miller’s daughter clearly has no choice about this either. Paul Zelinsky, artist Abortion, like Rumpelstiltskin, shows up not as a strong knight-on-a-horse savior, but as a manikin whispering in the ear of the vulnerable woman: I can rescue you from this mess. For example, the absolute power of the king. It raises many ethical, as well as social and political issues. ![]() The story can be read, of course, as a morality tale about the greed of Rumpelstiltskin and his willingness to take advantage of the desperation of the miller’s daughter, who must spin straw into gold or the king will have her killed.īut the story is more complex than that. So many questions, especially about ethics, are raised by these stories! I just read a version of the Brothers Grimm story Rumpelstiltskin, as retold and illustrated by Paul Zelinsky. This sounds like a good plan on paper, but it doesn’t work. After all, the mania boosts her creative energies and, as a professional illustrator, creativity is her livelihood.
