![]() ![]() That being said, I am well aware that an outsider’s temporary experience of the city is remarkably different from that of a person born and brought up there. The Istanbul I visited has been rebuilt for the most part and has a vibrancy and vitality that the memoir fails to capture. ![]() He depicts a city that no longer exists, a city in memory. Although the book was published in 2005, Pamuk is describing the city of his childhood and young adulthood, the Istanbul of the fifties and the sixties. The city I visited was colorful and bustling, a far cry from the dismal picture painted by the writer. It didn’t turn out to be quite the book I was looking forward to reading during my stay. I haven’t read any of Pamuk’s novels and I thought this would be a good introduction to his writing. I picked up Orhan Pamuk’s memoir, Istanbul: Memories and the City, in anticipation of a trip to Istanbul and finished reading it while I was in the city. I am continuing in the vein of my previous blog post and writing about a book I read in the place it was set. ![]() 5/19/2023 0 Comments Poison Ivy by Amy Chu![]() I was doing all their Five Forces, Michael Porter presentations, making all their stuff look really nice, and they paid really well. ![]() ![]() That was my first introduction to management consulting. The disturbing elements of political corruption and loss of human rights are lightened by moving depictions of sweet, funny moments between friends as well as deft political maneuvering by Kim herself when she was eventually questioned by authorities. The kinetic manhwa drawing style skillfully captures the personal and political history of this eye-opening memoir. As she learned the truth of her country’s oppressive fascist political environment, Kim became closer to the other book club members while the authorities grew increasingly desperate to identify and punish student dissidents. Kim was fearful at first, but her thirst for knowledge soon won out. Following an administrator’s advice to avoid trouble and pursue extracurriculars, she joined a folk dance team where she met a fellow student who invited her into a banned book club. ![]() The daughter of modest restaurant owners, Kim was apolitical-she just wanted to make her parents proud and be worthy of her tuition expenses.
